Biography
Ernst Leitz III was the second son of Industrialist Ernst Leitz II and the grandson of the founder of the company Ernst Leitz I. Ernst Leitz III passed the exams in 1924 and began working as a merchant. He joined his father's company and held a leading position. Sources are controversial regarding the role of the company: Langemann (1986) indicates that since 1928 he was the CEO of Ernst Leitz GmbH in Wetzlar. The Munzinger archive indicates that he, together with his brothers Ludwig and Gunther, became the CEO of the family business after the death of his father in 1956. Parisius / Scholl-Seibert reports that he was 44 years old managing director of Leitz-Werke.
Politician
Ernst Leitz has been involved in political activities since 1945. He was one of the founders of the CDU in Wetzlar and was chairman of the CDU Wetzlar. Until 1953, he was also chairman of the CDU in the Wetzlar region itself. In 1958, he was a co-founder of the CDU Hesse Economic Forum in Frankfurt.
After the Second World War in May 1945, he belonged to the Wetzlar City Committee. Since the local elections in Hesse in 1946, he was a member of the city council, and worked for 30 years until he resigned in 1975. He was awarded the honorary title of city elder. From February 26, 1946 to July 14, 1946 he was a member of the advisory state committee.
