Description

The total length reaches 8.8 cm. The head is moderately wide, the muzzle is flattened from above, with odontodes (skin teeth). On the sides of the mouth there are 2 antennae. The eyes are medium in size. The mouth is a suction cup . Chunky body covered with bony plates. Caudal stem with small odontodes. Dorsal fin large, long, with 1-2 hard rays. The adipose fin is small, located close to the dorsal. Pectoral and pelvic fins wide. Males have a sharp genital papilla, females have a large, rounded, convex. Anal fin elongated, with short base. The tail fin with a small notch, the blades are wide.

Color is light brown. Color varies depending on age and habitat to black or white. The belly is always white. There are 5-12 narrow and wide dark bands along the body, sometimes they are so wide that they merge with the main color. Striped fins.

Lifestyle

This is a bentopelagic fish. Occurs on a moderate course with a sandy bottom. This fish is quite territorial and aggressive. During the day, hiding among the snags and stones. Active at night. It feeds on algae and small invertebrates . Life expectancy is 15 years.

Reproduction

Sexual maturity comes in 1.5-2 years. Spawning takes place in a cave with a narrow entrance. The male protects the clutch.

Spread

It is endemic to Venezuela . It lives in the basins of the rivers Apure and Karoni .
