Defile ( fr. Défilé ) or gorge [1] in military affairs:

  1. narrow passages in natural barriers or in impassable terrain , which can be used to move your troops or, conversely, to prevent the movement of enemy troops along them.
  2. showing (demonstration) by military personnel of techniques and methods of rebuilding with weapons in parades ; parade ground ;

Thus, defile in military affairs:

  1. go through the gorge;
  2. take place in a ceremonial march [2] [3] .

Primary meaning (narrow passage)

Defile as a narrow passage tactically is a relative concept, directly dependent on the size of the military unit . For example, a defile for a division may not be that for a battalion or a smaller unit.

The defile in the military sense includes all areas suitable as routes for troop movement, but limited by impenetrable obstacles from both flanks - gorges , mountain passes , narrow intergranular isthmuses, tunnels , bridges , fords , dams and dams on rivers, gati and roads through swamps, roads and clearings through dense and vast forests, streets of settlements, tunnels, etc.

Defile defense can be both passive and active. In the first case, the defending side seeks only to block the enemy from passing through the defile or exit from it, and does not intend to go on the offensive through the defile. Then the position for the troops is chosen, as a rule, inside the defile or behind it. In the second case, the belligerent has the goal of ensuring the passage of its troops on both sides of the defile for an advance or retreat for its troops. At the same time, the position is always preferred in front of the defile, in order to prevent the adversary from taking control of it at least on one side.

In addition, the term defile is applied to demonstration dressage of horse units . The latter value is also often used in relation to a similar equestrian sport .
