St. Michael's Church ( Alb. Kisha e Shën Mëhillit ) is a medieval Byzantine church located outside on top of the hill of Berat in southern Albania . As part of the (a UNESCO World Heritage Site ), the church was built, possibly in the fourteenth century, and is dedicated to the Christian archangel Michael . [1] [2]
The church is relatively small and was built in the south of the Kalai district on a steep rock. This is a chapel attached without any internal support, with a dome on a drum and a narthex in the western part. [3] It was built on a cruciform plan with a dome on top. The walls are characterized by a combination of rows of red bricks with stone.
Inside the temple, the remains of the picturesque walls retain only a few traces. Today, a collection of frescoes and icons has been preserved. Unlike other churches in Berat, here the observed proportions developed a higher level and a tendency to improve architectural forms.
