Thalheim, Bernhard

Born in Radebeul near Dresden , East Germany . In 1975, Talheim earned a master's degree in mathematics and computer science at Dresden Technical University , in 1979 he defended his dissertation in discrete mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow State University ^[1] , and in 1985 underwent a habilitation in theoretical computer science at Dresden Technical University.

From 1986 to 1989, Thalheim was an assistant professor at the Dresden Technical University. In 1989, he moved to Rostock University , where he was a professor until 1993. From 1993 to 2003, he was dean and professor at the Brandenburg Technical University, and from 2003 he is a professor at Kiel University. Talheim was a visiting professor at the University of Kuwait, the Alpine-Adriatic University of Klagenfurt , and the Institute of Mathematics. Alfred Renyi Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Massey University , New Zealand .

Thalheim received a number of awards for its achievements in the field of information systems development. In 2005, he became an honorary professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University ^[1] . On October 22, 2008, he received the Peter Chen Prize from Elsevier for researching an ER model ^[2] . He is the founder of the German branch of the DAMA association, the editor of several scientific journals, and a member of the advisory board of Dataport ^[3] .

Talheim's fundamental contribution to the theory ^[4] and the science of conceptual modeling ^[5] is the study of the extended ER-model ^[6] , dependency in relational databases ^[7] , as well as participation in the creation of a handbook on conceptual modeling ^[8] . Thalheim contributed to the formalization and theoretical approach to conceptual modeling.

The Higher Order Extended Entity-relationship model in relational databases serves as the basis for many system analytical and design methodologies, CASE and repository systems. The HERM model is the basis for a wide range of commercial projects in Germany and Europe and is usually referred to with reference to the basics of database management systems and ER-models. Thalheim's approach has been recognized as one of the best methodologies for developing databases.
