Biography

Adolf Erbsle was born in New York in a family of merchants descended from Barman . His grandfather was a co-founder of Julius und August Erbslöh, and his father was a co-owner of the export company Dieckerhoff, Raffloer & Co. For 15 years he worked in New York until he returned with his family to Barman in 1887.

In 1901, Adolf Erbsle began to study at the Academy in Karlsruhe : his teachers were Ernst Schurth (1848-1910) and Ludwig Schmid-Reutte (1862-1909). During his stay in Karlsruhe, Erbsle met Alexander Kanoldt and Georg Tappert. In 1907, Erbsle married Adeline Schuhard - the wedding took place in the Kalenberg castle near Warburg, which was acquired by father-in-law.

Since the fall of 1908, Erbsle began to attend the “pink salon” by Marianne von Verefkin . Together with her and Alexei Yavlensky, he developed the project for the creation of the "Association of New Artists of Munich" (NKVM); after the creation of the association, Erbsle became Acting Secretary.
