Holograph on the Rainbow Field

The Rainbow Field (Nijigahara) is the intersection of the past and the present of seven different people. Children's horror stories, a monster in the tunnel, family secrets, “skeletons in the closet,” attempts at rape, murder, extortion, perversion, and an unusually large population of butterflies — all these individual strings are gradually interwoven into a single pattern of “The End of the World of the New Era”.

In Japan, the manga was published in Ohta Publishing's QuickJapan magazine. The completely one-volume edition was released on July 25, 2006 ^[4] . Fantagraphics Books acquired a license to issue manga in English on January 1, 2013, indicating that this work will be much darker than the previous two releases, but still, in terms of their initiative, publish “unique artistic voices” ^[5] . The manga translated by Matt Thorne was subsequently published on March 19, 2014 ^{[6] [7]} . The manga was also published in France and Italy by Panini Comics ^{[8] [9]} , in Spain by Ponent Mon and Milky Way Ediciones (reissue) ^{[10] [11] [12]} , in Germany by Tokyopop ^[13] , in Brazil by the JBC publishing house ^[14] and in Taiwan by Taiwan Tohan. ^[15] In Russia, the rights to manga belong to the Comic Book Factory ^[16] .

The manga was generally approved. Reviewers praised the complex multi-layered narrative and gloomy enveloping alarming atmosphere, thanks to which you can fully imbue the story. The author's symbolism of Asano and his approach to small things were also noted. Jason Thompson from Anime News Network found the manga confusing and gloomy, saying that the manga is a single “stream” that you need to be able to play with in the way Inio Asano does. He also compared the image of the dark side of people in the work with the films of David Lynch ^[17] . Comparing the manga to Asano’s previous work, Comics Worth Reading's Joanna Carlson said of the manga that “it has the same strong emphasis on characters, but more creepy and brutally destructive.” She concluded that “a complex multi-layered narrative rewards the mindful” ^[18] . Ng Suat Tong of The Hooded Utilitarian on Manga: “The miracle of narrative needlework and one of the best comics translated in recent years.” ^[19] Publishers Weekly Magazine in a published review, he called the manga “a dark and perverse psychological horror story, equally beautiful and very disturbing,” adding that “it will impress and make readers puzzled, many will probably have to return to it more than once to dig deeper and discover something new for myself ” ^[20] . Hillary Brown of Paste (magazine) compared the manga to the film Butterfly Effect ^[21] . Wired 's Laura Hudson called the manga “a haunting graphic novel,” classifying it as a horror story. “This is not a very simple or good story, but it is unshakable and beautiful,” says Brown in his recession ^[22] . Oliver Sava from the AV Club described the manga as “an exciting piece that tests the reader” ^[23] . Kevin Church of Comics Alliance praised the focus of the plot, balanced and detailed Asano symbols, as well as a realistic depiction of the emotions of the characters. The reviewer found the Nijigahara Holograph much more complicated than Solanin and called the manga a standing challenge that “carries a tangible fear that will haunt you after you put it aside” ^[24] . David Berry of the National Post discovered a mistake in Asano’s excessive indulgence, implying that everything in the manga was connected, but called the story “which can still capture a unique moment with piercing emotionality, leaving feelings drawn out like evening shadows” ^[25] .

Manga is outlined in the list of The New York Times Manga Best Sellers , being the 6th best seller of the week from March 2 to 8, 2014 ^[26] . The manga was nominated for the 2014 Diamond Gem Awards, selected by retailers of comic books based on sales for the Manga Trade Paperback of the Year category ^[27] . Paul Gravett contributed manga to the top 10 manga of 2014 ^[28] .
