Triennale Setouti

Temporary installation on Ibukijima Island

Setouchi Triennale ( 瀬 戸 内 国際 芸 術 祭 , Setouchi Triennale ) is a contemporary art festival held on the twelve islands of the Inland Sea of Japan and in two coastal cities. The festival has been held since 2010, its goal is to revitalize the Inland Sea region, which is suffering from depopulation. An average of one hundred and fifty artists, both from Japan and other countries, take part in the festival. The festival program includes not only fine art (sculptures, installations), but also musical and theatrical performances and events [1] [2] . The festival program is divided into three sessions - spring (March-April), summer (July-September) and autumn (October-November).

The next festival will be held in 2019.

Islands and participating cities

  • Naoshima - on this island there are several museums of modern art
  • Tesima - on this island is a museum of modern art
  • Magijima - the island is associated with the mythical island of Onigashima from the legends of Momotaro . There are caves on the island, in which, according to legend, monsters from legends lived
  • Ogijima
  • Shodoshima - the island is known for the olive garden (the only place in Japan where olives are grown), the pilgrimage route, and also as the place where the action of the novel and the film " Twelve Eye Pairs " unfolds
  • Oshima is a small leprosorium island, one of the four leprosoria in Japan. Until 1996, a law was in force in Japan requiring the mandatory isolation of leprosy patients . Despite the fact that the law has been repealed, several dozen patients continue to live on the leper colony island. Although they are actually healed and have the right to leave the island, their reintegration into society is hindered by their high age (on average, in the region of seventy to eighty years) and the social stigma that remains in Japanese society towards (former) leprosy patients. During the first triennial in 2010, the island was first open to (limited) visits [3] .
  • Inujima
  • Samijima - the former island, now, as a result of alluviums, was merged with the island of Shikoku.
  • Honjima - on this island is the historical district of Kasajima, which has the status of a group of traditional buildings
  • Takamijima
  • Avashima
  • Ibukijima
  • Takamatsu is a city playing the role of the center of the triennial. Ferries leave from here for most of the participating islands.
  • Port Uno, part of Tamano - as well as Takamatsu is an important center of water transport (ferries) in the Inland Sea of Japan
