“The History of Luga Serbs” became the second fundamental work on Serboluga history after the 144-page “ History of the Serboluga people ” written by Pole V. Boguslavsky and M. Gornik in 1884 (at a time when the Luga Serbs were subjected to national oppression in Germany) [1] .

The decision to create a multi-volume “History of the Luga Serbs” was made by the leadership of the Institute of Serbluzhitsk Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (at the suggestion of the historians of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and Karl Marx University in Leipzig) on June 25, 1962. The second congress of the Fifth Union Congress of Domovina , held on April 27, 1963, supported this proposal. The upcoming work was undertaken by the Institute of Serbluzhitsky Ethnology. The Academy of Sciences included the project in the central research plan of the Historical Section at the Academy in 1964-1970. To clarify the methodological issues of recent history in 1967, the Academy established a temporary working group of the Historical Special Commission. In 1969, a meeting was held at the Directorate of the Central Institute of the Academy of Sciences, at which a decision was made to expand the monograph from three to four volumes. In addition to the team of authors, experts from a number of institutes of the Academy of Sciences and Universities of the German Democratic Republic, as well as the USSR and Poland [2] took part in the work on the “History of Luga Serbs” (the text of the future monograph was discussed in a number of countries [3] ). In 1979, the team of authors was awarded the Order of the Banner of Labor [4] .

The work was written under the guidance (under the general editorship [4] ) of M. Casper , F. Metschka , J. Sholty and K. Schiller [5] . The first in the world (in 1975) was the second volume of the monograph, covering the period from 1789 to 1917. In 1976 - the third volume (the period from 1917 to 1945), in 1977 - the first (from ancient times until 1789), in 1979 - the fourth (since 1945) [3] . As one of the authors of the monograph, Jan Solt, noted, “the four-volume“ History of the Luga Serbs ”for the first time from Marxist-Leninist positions gives a general picture of the past, present and future Serboluzhitsky people” [6] .

The monograph is accompanied by numerous illustrations and maps (for example, the borders of the Serboluzhitsky language area, the spread of peasant unrest). At the end of each volume is a list of basic literature; registered and geographical signs, index of public and political organizations [7] .
