World Blood Donor Day is an international day established in May 2005 during the 58th World Health Assembly in Geneva (Resolution WHA58.13). Held annually on June 14th.
The donor comes from the Latin "donare" - to give. In the case of blood donors, life is often a gift to the recipient.
On this day in 1868, Karl Landsteiner was born, an Austrian doctor, immunologist, who received the Nobel Prize in 1930 for the discovery of human blood groups .
Four international organizations that called for voluntary and free blood donations - WHO , the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent , the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society for Blood Transfusion - initiated 14 June World Donor Day.
