The twenty-four-story building in the Largo de Paisandu district at Rua Antonio de Godoy, house 22 - next to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of São Paulo - was designed by architect Roger Zmechol in the style of modernism . Wilton Paes de Almeida was one of the first concrete buildings in São Paulo on a metal frame with a fully glazed facade. The total area of the premises was 12 thousand square meters. The decoration of the building was a majestic spiral staircase leading from the first to the second floor [2] .

The Wilton Paes de Almeida was built between 1961 and 1968 by Morse & Bierrenbach as an office center and was originally owned by Sebastian Paes de Almeida , Head of the National Bank of Brazil and Minister of Finance in the Government of Kubitschek . He named the building after his older brother Wilton. After his death in 1975, the building was transferred to the federal government of Brazil, from 1980 to 2003 it housed the São Paulo Federal Police Department, and on the ground floor the National Institute for Social Security [3] . After the federal police moved to another place, the building was empty and was abandoned. He was gradually settled by homeless people . In 2015, the Federal Government put up Wilton Paes de Almeida for sale for $ 20 million, but no buyer was found [4] .

May 1, 2018 at 01.30 at night in one of the rooms of the fifth floor, populated by four illegal residents, a short circuit occurred in the electric extension cord, which simultaneously included a refrigerator, microwave and TV [5] . A fire broke out spread across the lower floors of the building. The rapid spread of fire was facilitated by a large number of wooden structures built by homeless people on the premises. Three empty elevator shafts created good traction, which allowed the fire to spread to the upper floors. Soon the whole building was engulfed in flames, the fire spread to the neighboring houses, which the firemen managed to defend [6] .

The height of the mountain of debris reached 15 meters. On May 12, 2018, when firefighters completed the analysis of the rubble, four deaths were reported, including two ten-year-old twin boys and a man who fell from a height during a fire. Four people are reported missing [7] .
