History
The title of leader Mata'af is one of the highest titles in Samoa.
Since the end of the 19th century, during the colonial era, Yosefo played a key role when Germany , Great Britain and the United States fought for control of Samoa . Each Western power had its own candidate for the "kingdom" of Samoa, and Mata'afa was Germany's preferred candidate.
At the end of the 19th century, Mataa'afa Yosefo was exiled to the Marshall Islands , he was allowed to return in 1898. The Germans supported his claim to the kingdom.
