John Finan Barry ( Eng. John Finan Barry , December 12, 1873 - April 9, 1940 ) - American chess player , master. A lawyer by profession. One of the strongest amateur chess players of the USA at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries.

In 1896, he challenged the title of US champion , but lost the match to J. Chauvalter .
In 1904 he participated in an international tournament in Cambridge Springs .
As part of the US team, he participated in 12 of 13 matches by telegraph against the team of England (total score - 7½ out of 12: + 6-3 = 3). In the first five matches, he invariably triumphed over his English opponents.
He lived and had a law practice in Boston . He was president of the Boston Chess Club "Yellow Mandarin" (literally. "Mandarin with the yellow button" - "Mandarins of the Yellow Button"; later - SC named after Deshapelya). For 25 years he led the chess department in the Boston Transcript .
