Club career

Early career

A year after the birth of Peter, the family moved to Bashkiria , but soon returned to Tashkent , and in 1993 Odemwingie, along with his mother and older sister Alsu, moved to Naberezhnye Chelny , where he studied at the KAMAZ Sports School under the supervision of Viktor Borisov until the age of 15. In 1995-1998 he studied at the football school of Moscow CSKA . He didn’t play a single match for the team, even in the double - the coaches considered it unpromising. But in 1998, his father sent his son to Nigeria, where he began playing for the Bendel Insurance club, where he spent three seasons.

In 2002 he moved to the Belgian La Louviere , with whom he won the Belgian Cup 2002/03.

Lille

In 2005 he moved to the French Lille . It was in this team that Odemwingie fully revealed himself as a player. The best for the striker was the 2005/06 season, when he became the second scorer of the French championship (14 goals), took third place with the team in the championship and went to the Champions League with his club.

In July 2007, rumors circulated in the press about his impending transfer to Spartak Moscow, but the deal did not take place; according to the owner of Spartak Leonid Fedun : “In our list of desired acquisitions, he occupied only fourth place. Moreover, paying him thirty million dollars is too much. This is a combination of transfer value, commission and salary. Actually, the French requested 12 million euros for the transfer, and the player himself wanted a salary of 3 million dollars ” [4] .

Lokomotiv

On July 19, Odemwingie signed a contract with Moscow Lokomotiv, on July 19 he was officially introduced as a railroad player and received a shirt with the 9th number, and on July 22 he made his debut as part of the wards of Anatoly Byshovets in the match against CSKA. The most successful season in Lokomotiv for Peter was the 2008 season. That year he became the team's top scorer with 10 goals. In the future, his game only worsened: the next year he scored 7 goals, and in the 2010 season he could not distinguish himself at all, while showing a game of rather poor quality.

West Bromwich Albion

On August 20, 2010, Odemwingie signed a three-year contract with the West Bromwich Albion club [5] ; the amount of transfer amounted to 2.5 million euros [6] . In the new club, he received a T-shirt with number 24. In the first match for the English club, Odemwingie scored a goal in the 81st minute and brought West Bromwich a victory over Sunderland [7] . After the scandalous racist banner posted by Lokomotiv fans and the words “Thank you, West Bromwich!” [8] , Peter said:

At Lokomotiv, they constantly put pressure on me, I was a victim. I was accused in Moscow of Nigeria attending the World Cup, but Russia not. They said that I do not want to play, because I think only about the world Cup, but that was not so. For three years, Lokomotiv has not achieved any results that were necessary. All this helped the fans in their quest to make me a scapegoat. They allowed themselves racist shouts at me. It was hard to deal with, so now I'm happy that everything is behind. I spent three seasons in Russia. I played several important matches and I will always be grateful to them for this opportunity. I managed to spend three years with my mother — I was completely in football since I was 15 years old — and that’s why I can forget about most of the negative [9] .

For its part, in September 2010, West Bromwich fans posted a “Thank you, Locomotive!” Poster [10] . According to the results of September, Odemwingie was recognized as the best player of the month of the Premier League , where he scored 2 goals and made an assist in three matches [11] . Peter’s goals brought his club a victory over Arsenal (3: 2 away , September 25, 2010 ) [12] , as well as a draw (2: 2) in a match with West Ham on November 10, 2010 . In total, Peter scored 16 goals in the Premier League over the season, setting a club record [13] . August 18, 2011 there was information that Peter extended the contract with West Bromwich [14]

On February 12, 2012, in a match against Wolverhampton , Odemwingie scored his first hat-trick in the Premier League.

Cardiff City

On September 2, 2013, Odemwingie moved to Cardiff City , signing a two-year contract with a salary of about 2.25 million pounds sterling. He made his debut on September 22, 2013 in the match against Tottenham . The first goal for the club scored two days later - in the English League Cup against West Ham . In total, he played 17 matches for Cardiff and scored two goals in all tournaments. He got along well with Cardiff coach Malki Mackay, but after replacing him at Ole Gunnar Sulscher, Odemwingie lost his place in the squad.

Stoke City

On January 28, 2014, Odemwing signed a contract with Stoke City for 18 months, becoming part of Kenwen Johnson’s transfer to Cardiff. He made his debut the very next day - January 29 in a match against Sunderland, and scored the first goal a week later - on February 8, at the gate of Southampton. In total, in the Premier League in the 2013/14 season, he scored 5 goals in 15 games, which allowed him to count on a place in the expanded composition of the Nigeria national team before the World Cup.

Almost the entire 2014/15 season, Odemwingie suffered from injuries, as a result of which he only appeared on the field 8 times, but nevertheless extended the contract with Stoke City for another year.

In the season 2015/16 could not stand the competition and went on loan to the Bristol City Championship Club in March 2016, which included 7 games, scoring 2 goals.

Rotherham United

In the 2016/17 season, Odemwing signed a short-term contract with Rotherham United Champion 's Club, which also managed to hold only 7 games, but was not awarded with goals. The player notified the SMS coach of his departure at the end of the season.

Madura United

Finish his career Peter Odmevinge went to the Indonesian League 1, signing a one-year contract with the Madura United club on April 3, 2017. In his last season on a professional level, he scored 15 goals in 22 matches.

Team Career

Odemwingie played for Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations 2004 (scoring 4 goals in 6 games) and 2006 . At the African Cup of Nations 2008, he played in all matches of the national team (three times at the base and a substitution in a lost match with Côte d'Ivoire instead of John Utaki ), did not score a single goal. At the 2008 Olympics, he played in all 6 matches of the Nigeria national team, scoring 1 goal [15] ; became the silver medalist of the Olympic Games. At the last African Cup of Nations, 2010 was released as a substitute in the match with Benin , and in the match with Mozambique he scored a double, bringing the team a victory and reaching the playoffs.
