.be is the national top level domain for Belgium . However, registering .be domains is open to citizens and organizations of any country without restriction. The .be zone was originally administered by Professor Pierre Verbaten ( Dutch Pierre Verbaeten ) from Catholic University of Leuven ; In 2000, the management of the .be zone was transferred to DNS Belgium. At the end of 2005, there were more than 470 thousand second-level domains in the .be zone. In November 2005, the .be zone registry launched a free second-level domain registration campaign; on the first day of the action 17 thousand domains were registered. The action was valid until the beginning of 2006.
