Biography

Neil Koblitz received his bachelor 's degree from Harvard University in 1969 [1] , where he was awarded the Putnam Fellow in 1968. In 1974, he received a Ph.D. from Princeton University under the supervision of .

From 1975 to 1979 he taught at Harvard University [2] , and in 1979 began working at the University of Washington .

Mathematics as Propaganda

A 1981 article, “Mathematics as Propaganda,” [3] criticized the misuse of mathematics in the social sciences.

This helped Serge Leng to stop the nomination of political scientist Samuel Huntington as a member of the US National Academy of Sciences , convicting him of falsification of historical facts and unscientific use of pseudo-mathematical methods [4] [5] .

In The Mathematical Intelligencer Koblitz [6] [7] [8] , Steven Weintraub [9] and Saunders MacLane later criticized the arguments of Herbert Simon , who was trying to defend Huntington's work [10] .

Kovalevskaya Prize

In 1985, Neil Koblitz, along with his wife founded the Kovalevskaya Prize to award women scientists in developing countries. The award was funded from the sale of copyright biography of Sofia Kovalevskaya , written in 1983 by his wife [11] . For example, in 2011, one of the winners was the Vietnamese mathematician [12] .
