Design
After the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) announced in December 2009 its desire to create a new Precision Sniper Rifle , Barrett created MRAD in accordance with the specifications set forth by SOCOM. [3] Based on the successful Barrett 98B , the MRAD received many improvements, such as a folding stock, which makes it easier to carry the rifle. When folded, the butt snaps around the shutter handle, which increases the convenience of carrying the rifle. [1] The main property of MRAD (as a requirement of the military application PSR) is the ability of the shooter to change the barrel / caliber. Removing the two Torx screws in the receiver allows you to remove the barrel from the front of the receiver / forearm. The caliber is easily changed by changing the shutter and, if necessary, the receiver of the store. The barrel is factory-made lightweight, and its replacement takes only 2 minutes. In addition to the typical 0.338 Lapua Magnum, 0.300 Winchester Magnum and .308 Winchester caliber military cartridges, Barrett also offers popular conversion kits for 0.338 and 0.300 NORMA, 7 mm Remington, .260 Remington and 6.5 mm Creedmore ammunition kits. Barrel length varies from 432 mm to 660 mm, but not for all calibers. Trunks are both corrugated and weighted. The trigger can be removed without tools, which provides easy adjustment and cleaning. Additional MRAD features include: adjustment of the butt length and height of the cheek; polymer barrel guide (which acts as a dust cover); a firing mode switch duplicated on both sides, like the AR-15 ; two-way store receiver; the ability to install standard pistol grip type M16 / AR-15 . [1] Early MRADs had a Picatinny rail, which was located on the top of the receiver / forearm and had a length of 552.45 mm and a slope of 30MOA. Current MRADs have a 20MOA tilt bar. Shorter Picatinny rail (51-102 mm) can be located on the rear / front along the forearm. MRADs are available in several Cerakote colors; all the trunks are black. [6]
Like the M16 / AR-15 rifle, the upper and lower parts of the MRAD can be separated by pushing the rear and front two pins. Ejecting only the rear ejection pin allows the top of the receiver to bend to the front ejection pin, as in the AR, for ease of maintenance in the field. [7]
Compared to other rifles of this class .338 Lapua Magnum caliber, MRAD is capable of 0.5 MOA ( arc minute ) at a distance of up to 1500 meters. With standard ammunition, accuracy drops to 1 MOA. [8]
SOCOM PSR
The specific MRAD model that was presented for the PSR study was equipped with a barrel length of 62 cm and weighed 6.7 kg (without optics). [3] Remington Modular Sniper Rifle was selected as the winner of the PSR contest. [9]
Armed
- : In 2013, the MRAD rifle was adopted by the Israeli elite anti-terrorism special forces Yamam and SWAT, as a long-range sniper rifle to replace the old PGM 338 rifles. [10] After positive feedback from Yamam, the MRAD was adopted by the Israel Defense Forces.
- : Will be adopted in 2018 as a replacement for Arctic Warfare 7.62 mm sniper rifles [11]
- : Used by Norwegian armed forces special operations forces since 2015. [12]
