Biography

In 730, Rain ap Kadugan died and his eldest son, Theudos, became King of Dived. And the other son (or it is one and the same) Teudur , became co-ruler in Brikheiniog. Around 735, Aust ap Kadugan dies, Aust as his son inherits him.

He and his father are mentioned in the Book of Llandava as August and Elistil. Elvistle is also mentioned in the Book of Landandaf as a contemporary of Bishop Gurvan and Theudur, the other king in Brihneiog. Elvistl and Teudur vowed to keep peace with each other, but the devil forced Theudur to break the peace and kill Elvistl. Wendy Davis dates this event to 750. Hugh Thomas suggested that Elvistle was a cousin of Theudur. He had no children, all of his territory was cleaned by Theudur, becoming the sole ruler.

Elvistle is a bit of a problem, as he often seems to get confused with Alieds, the son of King Theudos or Theudur mentioned above. There is also Alidad up Rain, the brother of Theudur, as if only to bring more confusion. This leaves the question of who Elvistle up Aust was. Alidad is shown genealogies from Jesus College with a daughter named Sanant, but his father is not shown, which means that he can be any of the three candidates (although, most likely, only two senior candidates). Sanant marries Noui the Old , who was also called Noui ap Teudur (the son of Teuder or, rather, the son-in-law of the marriage just mentioned).

Can both Aliseds be the same person? This is the most likely explanation given the similarity of their dates. Both would be old enough in 730 to already have a daughter who could marry the successor of all the ruling rulers and princes of their generation. Under Noui, the state seems to return to one supreme ruler (if it was no longer with the sons of Theudos, and one of them had superiority over the others).
