Pinckney

Pinckney ( lat. Pinckneya ) - a genus of woody plants of the family Marenovye ( Rubiaceae ). It includes a single species - pubescent , or fluffy , or softly pubescent ( Pinckneya pubens ).

Endemic to the southeastern United States : South Carolina , Georgia and Florida .

Botanical Description

Deciduous shrubs or trees , up to 6 (10) m tall. Spreading branches . The leaves are simple, opposite, elliptical or oblong-ovate, (5) 8-20 cm long, 4-10 cm wide, widened near or below the middle, whole, dark green (paler below), pubescent (initially felt); the tip is pointed or short-pointed; wedge-shaped base, gradually narrowed.

The flowers are bisexual, collected near the ends of the branches in sparse branched, small-flowered corymbose inflorescences . Calyx is bell - shaped, of 5 lanceolate lobes (of which 1-2 become dilated, petal - shaped, pink or cream, 3.6-8 cm long). Corolla is wheel-shaped, light yellow or yellowish-green, with red or purple stripes; petals 5, fuse into a narrow tube, 1.4-2.6 cm long, with oblong, shorter than the tube, bent lobes. Five stamens exposed from the tube. Pestle one. The fruit is a round, hemispherical, bivalve box , 2-3 cm long. Seeds are flat.
