Palm (anatomy)

Palm of human left hand

Palm ( lat. Palma manus ) , also a hand , metacarpus - the area of the body of primates (including humans ), the inner (as opposed to the back) side of the wrist from the wrist to the fingers (not including the fingers themselves) [1] [2] .

The palms and palms of the fingers of primates are not covered with hair.

Fingerprints of the papillary lines of the palm, along with fingerprints, are used in fingerprinting to identify a person.

One of the oldest systems of divination about the individual characteristics of a person, his experiences and his future fate, palmistry , is based on the interpretation of the skin relief of the palms, papillary and flexor lines, as well as hills on the palm.

Building

The palm in a bent position forms a depression in the shape of a boat. This concavity (deepening), limited on one side by the elevation of the thumb ( thenar ), and on the other by the elevation of the little finger ( hypothenar ), increases with the reduction of the thumb and flexion of the rest. The skin of the palm is abundantly equipped with nerves and blood vessels and, as a result, has a higher temperature and sensitivity than the back of the hand, it contains a large number of sweat glands . On the skin of the palm there are three permanent lines (palmar folds), which almost never disappear during inflammatory processes, edema, and the like.

The subcutaneous tissue of the palm is dense. The palmar aponeurosis ( aponeurosis palmaris ) in the middle of the palm is especially well developed and has the shape of a triangle, at the apex of which the tendon of the long palmar muscle is woven, and the base is facing the fingers, where the aponeurosis diverges into four flat strands , between which transverse bundles are stretched. At the places where the aponeurosis transitions into thin fascial plates covering the muscles of the elevations of the thumb and little finger, partitions connecting to the fascia of the interosseous muscles depart from it deep into it. As a result of this, three fascial beds are formed on the palms - two lateral and middle; lateral - for the muscles of the thumb and little finger, the median - for the tendons of the flexors of the fingers [3] .

Etymology

The modern version of the word - “palm” - was first found in the dictionary in 1704.

In the written monuments of the Old Russian language, the word “dolon” and the related Old Slavonic “hand” are found. According to one version, subsequently, by rearranging syllables from the word “dolon”, “lodon” was formed. The initial meaning of the word "current", "floor barn", that is, "an even place on the current or barn" [4] [2] . According to another version, the name “palm” comes from the word “boat”, since in a bent position the palm forms a depression in the shape of a boat.
