Hewitt was associated with the left wing of the party and belonged to the followers of Tony Benn . In 1981 , she publicly condemned left-wing Laborites who did not vote for Benn as deputy party leader during the election, which allowed Denis Healy to defeat. In 1983 , Hewitt tried to become a member of Parliament , after the defeat was the press secretary of the leader of the Labor Party, Neil Kinnock . She was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997 .
In 1998 , she became a member of the government as Economic Secretary of the Treasury . In 1999 , she was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and was responsible for small business and electronic commerce. After the election in 2001 , Hewitt became Secretary of Commerce and Industry, and she was also appointed a member of the Privy Council . In May 2005 , she headed the Ministry of Health, in which she became known as a supporter of the complete ban on smoking in public places (which eventually became law on July 1, 2007 ). She also sought to introduce medical training for the Application Service for young doctors, the project of introducing this system was criticized by the opposition and the medical environment (the Conservative Party even expressed a vote of no confidence in Hewitt, but without result).
Hewitt held this position until the end of Tony Blair's premiership . The new prime minister, Gordon Brown , who took office in June 2007 , did not appoint her to any ministerial post. She left parliament in 2010 .
