Career

Delen began his career at the Gremio Club. In 1958, he moved to Vasco da Gama [3] . In 1961, the striker became a player of the Argentinean River Plate , where he made his debut on April 16 in a match with Lanus (5: 1). On July 23 of that year, Delen scored the first goal for the club, hitting the goal of Rosario Central (4: 2) in the 39th minute of the meeting [4] . In 1962, he scored 19 goals for the club, becoming the third sniper of the championship. But the club took second place, losing two points to Boke Juniors [5] . In the same championship, he hit a penalty in the match between Rivera and Boki, but goalkeeper Antonio Roma was able to beat off the strike, as a result of the Juniors match won 1-0, and these lost points were not enough for Rivera catch up with an opponent [2] [3] . In 1966, he helped the club reach the final of the Libertadores Cup , but there the team lost to Peñarol . In total for River Plate, the forward played until 1967, having played 98 matches in the championship and scored 35 goals [6] , a total of 110 matches and 36 goals. The last match for the club forward held May 21 with the club “ Deportivo Espanyol ” (1: 3) [4] . Delen ended his career in the clubs “ Kolo-Kolo ” [2] , “ Universidad Catholic ”, where he played 7 matches and scored 1 goal [4] , and “ America ”.

In 1970, he began his coaching career as an assistant to Didi at River Plate [3] . From April to December 1973, he independently led the team [2] [7] . In 1975, Delen became the head coach of Hurricane . Later, the Brazilian worked from 1976 to 1977 at Veles Sarsfield [8] , was an assistant to Didi at Al Ahly [3] . Then he worked at Argentinos Juniors , again Veles Sarsfield [9] , San Lorenzo , Gimnasia and Esgrim . In 1989, Delen returned to River Plate to work as general manager of the youth squads [3] [10] . With his help, the club turned out to be a lot of young players who grew up in football stars, including Javier Mascherano , Ariel Ortega , Marcelo Gallardo , Radamel Falcao , Hernan Crespo , Pablo Aymar , Javier Saviolu , Santiago Solari . At the same time, he also had setbacks. When the young Lionel Messi was watching at the club, Delen refused him, saying: “There are few like him here” [3] . In December 2001, when Jose Maria Aguilara came to the presidency of River Plate, Delen was fired [11] . The Brazilian himself was very upset by this decision and complained that the reason for the dismissal was not explained to him [12] . After that, he lived in Buenos Aires, where he died in 2007 of a heart attack while in a candy store on Calle Paraguay [3] [13] .
