Milestones Biography

Born on September 23, 1972.

Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (2010, thesis: "Long-period climatic fluctuations in the Arctic and their relationship to global climate change") [1] .

Since 1996 he has been working at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics named after A. M. Obukhov of the Russian Academy of Sciences (deputy director for science), since 2015 part-time at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences [2] , where he heads the laboratory of climatology at the Institute of Geography [3] .

In December 2015, he was awarded the honorary academic title of Professor of RAS [4] .

In October 2016, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Department of Earth Sciences .

Scientific Activities

V. A. Semenov is a specialist in the field of diagnostics and modeling of climate change, including the study of the mechanisms of formation of extreme weather and climate phenomena.

Main scientific results [5] [6] :

  • proposed a mechanism explaining the formation of abnormally cold weather patterns in winter over the territory of Eurasia (noted at the beginning of the XXI century) as a result of the nonlinear response of atmospheric circulation to the reduction of the area of Arctic sea ice ;
  • the reason for the formation of extreme precipitation in Krymsk in July 2012 was established : there was an initiation of the mode of deep convection during the warming of the Black Sea ;
  • for the first time, quantitative estimates have been obtained of the contribution of the natural long-term variability of the oceanic meridional circulation in the North Atlantic to global climate change in the last decades of the 20th century;
  • The connection between the Atlantic Long-Period Oscillation (ADC) and the changes in ice cover and temperature in the Arctic has been established;
  • The presence of a threshold for instability in the Arctic climate system has been revealed - the possibility of completely stopping the flow of oceanic waters into the Barents Sea has been shown, which leads to dramatic climate changes in the Arctic, and the physical mechanism of this phenomenon has been explained.

V.A. Semenov is the author of more than 80 scientific works. In total, they are cited over 2,900 times, the Hirsch index is 24 (see RSCI data [2] ). Some of the publications presented in the RISC database:
