Biography
At the age of 17, in the winter of 1874/75, Etienne Terrus entered the Paris National Higher School of Fine Arts , becoming one of the students of Alexander Cabanel . Since he, by his own admission, could not get used to life in a big city, Terryus soon returned to his hometown, which did not leave the rest of his life.
Terryus had friendly relations with Andre Derain , Aristide Mayol , Henri Matisse , Georges-Daniel de Montfrell and other artists from the group of Nabis .
Museum
For a long time Terryus was almost forgotten, until in 1994 a museum in honor of the artist was opened in Eln [2] . In April 2018, a message appeared that 82 of the 140 paintings exhibited there were fakes. The first fake was identified when the art critic Eric Forkada, who was working on a new exhibition, noticed on one of the landscapes the buildings built after Terryus’s death. Many works were bought with municipal money (160 thousand euros, more than 12 million rubles), some were donated by two local organizations, some of the paintings came from private collectors [3] .
