Biography

During the Northern War, he served as a navigator on the Swedish suture "Astrild". She participated in the battle at the mouth of the Neva , was wounded and captured. Peter I personally ordered to care for the wounded and treat him, after recovery, Peter was convinced of the transition to Russian service.

He became an officer in the troops of Peter I. In 1709 he was a second lieutenant. In 1713 he was promoted to lieutenant and appointed commander of the ship " St. Anthony ", and then the sluts "Lyset". Subsequently, this officer carried out hydrographic work in the Baltic and in the Caspian Sea. In 1719, Peter the Great instructed him to describe and map the western shore of the Caspian Sea , starting from the mouth of the Volga to Astrabat and to the Kura River, and then, having checked the previously compiled description of the eastern shore, make a general map of the Caspian Sea . According to Peter’s instructions, Verdun was supposed to spread the word everywhere that the description was made solely for commercial purposes. Verdun carried out the work together with the hydrograph F. Soimonov . Verdun returned from this expedition in 1720 . In the same year, in St. Petersburg, according to the results of research, a map was printed that gave the first basically correct image of the Caspian Sea.

In the Persian campaign of 1722 - 1723, Verdun commanded all flipper vessels. [1] He delivered artillery, ammunition and provisions to Derbent .

In 1724 he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank and appointed commander of the Astrakhan port, and in 1727 promoted to captain of the 1st rank . In 1728-1730, he commanded the battleships of the Baltic Fleet .
