Biography
Brian Ortega was born on February 21, 1991 in Los Angeles , has Mexican roots. At the age of seventeen, he began to seriously engage in boxing , underwent training under the guidance of coach James Larsen, who took him to school and taught him percussion skills. Later he mastered the technique of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , trained at the Gracie Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Torrance , where his mentor was the famous master Rorion Gracie , as well as his sons Riron, Rener and Ralek Gracie . Subsequently, from the hands of Rener Gracie received a black belt on the BZH [1] [2] .
Beginning of a professional career
He made his debut in mixed martial arts on a professional level in April 2010, using the " triangle " made his opponent give up in the first round. He fought in small regional promotions mainly in Southern California . Of all the fights, he always emerged victorious, won the champion titles in the versions of the local organizations Respect in the Cage and Resurrection Fighting Alliance in the featherweight category.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Having eight victories in his track record and not a single defeat, Ortega attracted the attention of the world's largest fighting organization Ultimate Fighting Championship and in April 2014 signed a long-term contract with it [3] . He made his debut in the UFC octagon in July of that year in a duel with Mike de la Torre - forced him to surrender in the first round with the help of a strangulation from behind, but then failed the doping test made after the tournament - traces of the drostanolone anabolic steroid were found in his sample. The fighter pleaded guilty, he was fined $ 2,500 and suspended from the battle for a period of nine months, while the result of the battle with De la Torre was canceled [4] [5] .
At the end of the period of ineligibility in June 2015, Ortega returned to the cage and won by technical knockout from the Brazilian Tiago Tavaris - both fighters were awarded the prize for the best fight of the evening [6] .
In 2016, he was defeated by Diego Brandan and Clay of Guid [7] [8] .
In 2017, Ortega successfully applied the “ guillotine ” to the Brazilian Renat Moikanu , earning a bonus for the best fight of the evening [9] . Then, with the same “guillotine”, he defeated compatriot Kaba Swanson - here he was awarded two prizes at once: for the best performance of the evening and for the best fight of the evening [10] .
He continued his series of victories in March 2018, knocking out former organization champion Frankie Edgar (this was the first time Edgar was knocked out). In this battle he was also awarded a bonus for the best performance of the evening [11] .
In the framework of the July UFC 226 tournament, a championship fight was planned between Brian Ortega and the current UFC lightweight champion Max Holloway [12] , however, in just a few days Holloway was forced to withdraw due to poor health.
