Description
Location
It is located on the spot where the Oryol Fortress was located in the 16th – 17th centuries. The Strelka Memorial Square adjoins the square on the north side, the waters of the Oka and Orlik rivers are washed from the east and west, and the Kommunalnikov Square and the Trade Row buildings on the south side. The name is derived from the Church of the Epiphany .
History
The territory of the square began to take shape in the middle of the 17th century and this is due to the construction of the Epiphany Monastery here (presumably in the middle of the 17th century and burned down in 1680), on the territory of which the Epiphany Church was located. After the fire, the monastery was moved to another place - on Import Mountain, and a new stone church was built. The temple was rebuilt many times, partially destroyed, but preserved and restored in 2015, and occupies a central place in the square - the only building at number 1. The square was named after the October Revolution. In the post-revolutionary years, the name was abolished . In 1860, trade from Cherkasskaya Street was transferred to the square, and from that time it was called the “Square of the Milk Bazaar” colloquially known as the “milk”. In 1935, the Milk Bazaar was transferred to the place where it is today (2018) - this is the Central Market. A square was destroyed in part of the square, cut down by the Germans during the war. In 1946, the square was restored and it received the name "Communalnikov Square" . In the early 1990s, the name of the square was restored [3] .
