Five wooden churches are mentioned in written sources about Novosil in the 1st quarter of the 17th century: in the fortress - the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (active); through the ravine on the landing - Nicholas the Wonderworker (acting); in the Streletsky settlement - the Passion-bearer of Christ George (acting), the Nativity of John the Baptist and Ilyinskaya with the chapels of Saints Flora and Laurus (dilapidated inactive).
In the city limits there was also the Ilyinsky Convent (abolished in 1764 as a result of secularization reform ), on the territory of which around 1764 a brick church was built in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God .
Until now (2018) only the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker has survived [1] [2] .
Description
In 1777, from the village of Mokhovoy , an old wooden Kazan church was transported and arranged at a cemetery (in the western part of the city), to perform ritual rites for the burial of the deceased [3] . In 1802, with the painstaking priest of the Nikolaev Church Mikhail Petrov, a brickless church was built at the cemetery in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. In 1877, at the expense of the Novosilsky merchant D.V. Belevtsev, a bell tower and a refectory in honor of All Saints were added to the church. Later in the temple, work was done on wall painting and a heating device. The temple was demolished in the middle of the XX century [4] [5] .
