Biography

Andrei Derksen was born on December 20, 1964 in the village of Serebropol, Tabunsky district, Altai Territory. [2]

He started to run only at the age of 18.

“And it all started with the athletics arena in the winter of 1982-1983. I didn’t run at that time. But while studying at the Polytechnic Institute and living in a hostel, which was located next to the arena, he often visited it. I came to watch all the competitions in a row. The arena at that time was slightly different than now, fully consistent with its name - athletics. He impressed me, a guy from a small village located in the Kulunda steppes, overly complex, shy. I began to run. You can start running at any age: at 10 years old and at 80. But at 19 years old, it’s too late to start jogging at medium distances. Especially when you want to achieve a good sports result, but God did not award you an outstanding talent. Lost time for the production of technology, the development of high-speed qualities. Running technique is still my weak point. I took only two years to run the middle distances, for which I am grateful to the first coach Nikolai Alexandrovich Biryukov. He did not torture me for a long time with medium distances and, seeing that the results were practically not growing, he advised me to try myself at longer distances. He talked with Ivan Gryaznov, asked him to work with me. Ivan Evgenievich agreed. The transition to Gryaznov was perhaps the most important step for my future sports career. The rest is a logical continuation. ” [3]

Currently lives in the city of Barnaul .

Marathon Des Sables

In 1994, for the first time took part in the multi-day race "Marathon des Sables" about 220 kilometers (6 stages) in the Sahara desert (Morocco) and won it with a result of 18:41:31 [4] .

“The main contender for the first place, Jesus Corredor (Jesus Corredor) - champion of Spain in the race for 100 kilometers. Besides him there were very strong marathon runners from France, Italy, Japan and England. They even won separate, short stages, but a stage of 80 kilometers put everything in its place .... Jesus Corredor and I finished this stage together, the last kilometers tried to run together so as not to get lost. In short stages, we usually ran together, but at the finish I managed to break away and win 30 - 50 seconds. As a result, my first place with a minimal advantage is about 3 minutes. For such a multi-day trip - this is extremely small. Besides me, the Russian woman Valentina Lyakhova became the absolute winner among women. ” [3]

He wins the race in 1995 and 1996 (result 19:20:58 [4] ).

“On these runs, my main competitors were the French P. Costa and Michel Joli. They are very good marathon runners. They tormented me at all stages except the longest one. On it, I was able to make a good margin of 10-12 minutes and the rest of the multi-day trip I felt comfortable - I just ran, holding the advantage. "

In 1997, he finished fourth with a result of 18:13:32 [4] .

“Until the 70th kilometer of the fourth day of the competition, everything turned out fine for me. My pursuers are Moroccans, Ahansal siblings (Lahcen and Mohamad). One played me 5 minutes, the other 17 - 18 minutes. 70 km, the longest 80 km stage - a nutritional point. We are together - I and two brothers. I feel very good. I think to myself that I won’t let them tear myself away, even for a second - I feel the strength in me. They outplayed me like in chess. They sacrificed a rook and won the queen. The older brother (Lahcen Ahansal) sacrificed his second place (he became fifth), for the first place of his younger brother (Mohamad Ahansal). " [3]

In 1998, because of the heat, he lost his distance.

“In March - April of this year there was an incredible heat. Air temperature + 40-45 ° С. This time I could not adapt to this heat. Came down in the third stage. The elder brother of Lahcen Ahansal has now won. The era of the Ahansal brothers has begun. Since then, they have, in turn, repeatedly won the Marathon des Sables. [five]

In total, Andrei Derksen participated in this race five times and won it three times.

Other ultramarathons

In 1992, he participated in a multi-day race, Madrid-Barcelona , dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and became the second after multiple champion and world record holder for 100 kilometers Konstantin Santalov .

Twice, in 1995 and 1999, Derksen became the silver medalist of the Vienna – Budapest Supermarathon race of 320 kilometers (five stages) [6] , one of the most significant ultra-marathons in Central Europe.

In 2001, Andrei took part in a 63-day run called Trans Australia “Race of Fire,” with a length of 4274.5 kilometers. Andrey became the second after Anatoly Kruglikov (305: 18: 45), winning 20 stages out of 63 and showing the result 323 hours 24 minutes and 47 seconds. [7]

Upon returning from Australia, Derksen stopped participating in international runs.
