Bread riots in Egypt ( Arabic : انتفاضة الخبز, intifāḍatul khobz ) is a strike that took place on January 18–19, 1977 in many cities of Egypt . These were hundreds of thousands of people who protested against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund , namely against the government’s decision to halve subsidies for essential products [1] . In protests, 79 people were killed, more than 550 were injured and 1,000 were arrested [2] . Subsidies have been reintroduced.
History
In 1976, the head of state applied for loans to the World Bank, which in turn strongly criticized the country's policy because of subsidizing essential goods. As a result, Anwar Sadat announced in January 1977 the abolition of subsidies for flour, oil and rice, which led to higher food prices by more than 50%.
