The state system of Northern Macedonia is based on the principles of a parliamentary representative democratic republic , where the Prime Minister is the head of government and a multi-party system . Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power belongs to both the government and the parliament. The judiciary does not depend on the executive and legislative branches. The Economist Intelligence Unit in 2016 rated Northern Macedonia as a “ hybrid regime ” [1] .

Political system

The political system of Northern Macedonia consists of three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The Constitution [2] is the supreme law of the country. Political institutions are formed by the will of their citizens by secret ballot in direct and general elections. Its political system of parliamentary democracy was established by the 1991 Constitution, which establishes the basic principles of democracy and guarantees democratic civil liberty [3] .

President

The President of Northern Macedonia is elected for a term of five years.

President of Northern Macedonia:

  • cannot hold any other public office or position in a political party;
  • elected for a five-year term and can fulfill no more than two terms;
  • is commander in chief of the Armed Forces and chairman of the Security Council;
  • nominates a candidate from the majority party or parties in parliament, who then proposes candidates for the government who are elected by parliament;
  • makes diplomatic appointments;
  • Awards orders and medals [4] .

Legislature

The Parliament of Northern Macedonia is the Assembly of Northern Macedonia. He is elected for four years, ranging from 120 to 150 deputies. Of this number, 120 are elected proportionally in 6 constituencies of 20 people each and 3 on the majority principle, specifically for the diaspora (depending on turnout) (the territory of North Macedonia represents one constituency) About 1.5 million voters are registered in the General Ballot. [5] .

Executive power

The government of Northern Macedonia is the executive branch of the government headed by the prime minister. According to the constitution, it is the highest executive authority in the state.

Judicial power

The judicial authority in the country is represented through the courts. At the head of the judicial system are the High Court, the Constitutional Court and the Republican Judicial Council. The latter is engaged in the election of judges in their positions [6] .

Administrative division

After the elections of 2005, together with the adoption of the new Constitution , the region is divided into 78 communities ( community ). The capital of Skopje is a group of 10 communities, united by the common name “City of Skopje [7] .
