The general elections in Paraguay 2018 were held on Sunday, April 22 . [1] President Horacio Cartes and Vice President Juan Afara of Colorado were not eligible for re-election. Cartes's presidential term was originally supposed to end only in August 2018, but he decided to relinquish his authority in order to take a seat in the country's Senate. The new president and vice president will take office on August 15, 2018 and will continue to perform their duties until August 2023.

Election System
The President of Paraguay is elected in one round of voting by a simple majority. [2] 80 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected on closed lists of proportional representation in 18 multi-member districts based on the departments of Paraguay. [3] 45 members of the Senate are elected in a single nationwide constituency using a closed list of proportional representation. [four]
