Harvey Gant ( born Harvey Gantt ; born 1943) is a statesman and politician in the United States of America . Member of the Democratic Party of the United States , from 1983 to 1987, was mayor of Charlotte .

Born January 14, 1943 in Charleston , South Carolina [1] [2] [3] , in the family of a shipyard worker. Harvey Gant was a civil rights activist in a secondary school. In 1963, he became the first African American to be accepted to study at Clemson University in South Carolina. He graduated with honors from the university, has a degree in architecture , and a master's degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . [four]

From 1974 to 1983, Harvey Gant was a civil servant on the Charlotte City Council. From 1983 to 1987, he was twice elected mayor of Charlotte, becoming the first African American in this position. In 1987, he lost the election to US Republican candidate Sue Mayrick . In the 1990s, he twice nominated for the US Senate , but both times lost to Republican candidate Jesse Helms . Harvey Gant was the last Democratic mayor of Charlotte until Anthony Fox was elected in 2009. [3]

After leaving big politics, he focused on working as an architect . In 2009, an African American cultural center was built in Charlotte, named after Harvey Gant. [5] [6]

Married to Lucinda Gant, four children were born in the marriage: Sonia, Erica, Angela and Adam. [3] Their daughter Sonya Gant worked as a TV presenter on one of the local TV channels Charlotte. [7] [8]
