Root flagellates [1] , or rhizomastigins [2] ( lat. Rhizomastigina , syn. Rhizomastigida) , is a previously distinguished detachment of free-living protozoa , an intermediate group between sarcode and flagellates . Representatives of the detachment possess 1-3 flagella and can form pseudopodia (pseudopods) [3] . Pseudopodia in shape can be finger-shaped or bristle-shaped. They live in fresh water [1] . In fossil state are not known [2] .

The group was singled out by the German zoologist Otto Buchley in 1884 . Currently, representatives of the Root-flagellate are included in the taxon, allocated by Thomas Cavallier-Smith , and who are given the rank of infratype or class [4] .
