Matina Suretis-Horner ( born Matina Souretis Horner ; born July 28, 1939 , Roxbury , Boston , Massachusetts , USA ) [2] is an American psychologist whose studies are devoted to the intelligence , motivation and achievements of women [3] [4] . She gained world fame in 1968, when she discovered the phenomenon of “fear of success” (or “the motive for avoiding success”) in women [5] [6] [7] [8] . Lecturer at the University of Michigan (1968-1969) [9] and Harvard University (1969-1989). When Horner started working at Harvard, she was one of three women in the faculty of this educational institution [10] . 6th President of Radcliff College (1972–1989) [11] . Vice-President of the company TIAA — CREF (1989-2003) [12] [13] . Member of the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science [4] . Ellis Island Medal Winner (1990) [14] [15] [16] .

Biography
Born into a family of Greek immigrants [10] [15] [17] Dimitris John Souretis and Christina Antonopoulos [18] .
She graduated from Bryn-Mar College with a bachelor of arts degree in honor of experimental psychology (1961) and the University of Michigan with a master's degree (1963) and a Ph.D. (1968) in the field of psychology [9] . She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa , Phi Delta Kappa , and Phi Kappa Phi [18] societies.
Career
In the years 1968-1969 - Lecturer at the University of Michigan.
Lecturer (1969-1970), Assistant Professor (1970-1972) and Associate Professor (1972-1989), Department of Social Relations, Harvard University [12] .
In 1972 she was elected the 6th and youngest president of Radcliffe College. She held this post until 1989.
In 1976-1977 - a member of the national group of the organization " College Entrance Examination Board " (today - College Board) [18] .
In 1977-1987, he was a member of the advisory board of the National Science Foundation [18] .
In 1979, US President Jimmy Carter appointed Horner to the Commission on the National Program of Action under the President [5] , and in 1980 - Chairman of the special group on the quality of American life [9] [19] .
In 1997–2003, he was chairman of the board of directors of the New York City Foundation. [18]
Winner of several prestigious awards and prizes [5] [9] .
Honorary Doctor of many colleges and universities, including the University of Pennsylvania (1975), Tufts University (1976), Smith College (1979), University of Hartford (1980), University of Michigan (1989), and American College of Greece (1990) [2] [18] .
Personal Life
Since June 25, 1961, married to physicist Joseph L. Horner. The couple has three children [18] [19] [20] .
