Biography
A native of Walthamstow , Tommy began his football career at the local Walthamstow Avenue club. In 1907 he moved to another London club Tottenham Hotspur . He spent three years in the team, but could not get into the main team. In 1910 he moved to the club of the Lancashire combination “ Barrow ”. In the 1911/12 season, he helped his club take 4th place in the First Division of the Lancashire Combination. His "impressive game" attracted the attention of a number of Football League clubs [1] .
In May 1912 he moved to Manchester United [3] . The main line-up debuted on December 25, 1912 in a match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge , in which United won 4-1. In that match, United goalkeeper Bobby Beale repelled a shot from from a penalty spot [4] . In total, in the 1912/13 season, Gipps spent 2 matches. In the 1913/14 season, he played 11 games in the main team, periodically replacing one of the midfielders - Dick Duckworth, Mickey Hamill, Joseph Heywood and George Hunter [1] . In the 1914/15 season, he played 10 matches for the team.
After the official tournaments stopped due to the war, Gipps continued to play for Manchester United in the military league, having played in 34 matches (out of 36) in the 1915/16 season [1] .
In mid-1916, Gipps joined the ranks of the British Army in the rank of private under the number DM2 / 179124. He served in the rear support service ( English Royal Army Service Corps ) outside the UK. In 1919 he was demobilized and returned to Manchester United, however, he did not appear in the main squad anymore and in May 1920 left the club as a free agent. In total, he drove 23 official matches for United (all in the pre-war period) [5] .
After leaving Manchester United, he returned to Essex , where he lived at 3 Station Station, Walthamstow, until his death on January 7, 1956. He bequeathed to his widow Alice 4437 pounds [1] .
