Biography
Since ельthelwold and his brother ельthelhelm were still infants when their father died during the battle with the Vikings , the throne was transferred to the king’s younger brother (and ельthelwold’s uncle) Alfred the Great [1] , who waged a war against the Vikings and won a decisive victory in the in the year 878 [2] .
After Alfred's death in 899, Ethelwold challenged the throne of his son [3] Edward the Elder . As a senior ételing (prince of the royal dynasty, who had the right to reign), ельthelwold had reasonable claims to the throne. He tried to raise an army to support him, but could not get enough support to meet Edward on the battlefield and fled to the Viking-controlled Northumbria , where he was adopted as king [4] [5] [6] [7] [8 ] [4] . In 901 or 902, he sailed with the fleet to Essex , where he was also accepted as king [9] .
The following year, Ethelwold convinced the East English Danes to attack Edward in Wessex and Mercia . Edward responded by attacking East Anglia , and when he called on the people of Kent [10] , he met with the Danes at the on December 13, 902. The Danes won, but suffered heavy losses, and Ethelwold died in battle.
