Internal classification
7 Pomo languages are known. They are divided into 4 branches, of which 3 include one language each.
- Western branch
- Northern group: Northern Pomo (†) (since 1994)
- southern group: central pomo (habenapo), porridge (southwestern pomo, kashia), southern pomo (galinomero)
- northeastern pomo (†)
- oriental pomo
- southeast pomo
The similarity of names suggests that these are only dialects of the same language, but this is not so at all.
Two Pomoian languages have already disappeared, the rest are spoken by small communities of elderly native speakers. Most native speakers have porridge.
External Relations
Pomoan languages are usually included in the alleged Hokan macrofamily along with many other languages of southwest North America.
