Herrit van Hoenthorst ( niderl. Gerrit van Honthorst , November 4, 1590 , Utrecht - April 27, 1656 , ibid) - Dutch artist of the Golden Age ; bright representative of the Utrecht school .

Biography

In the 1610s, he studied and worked in Rome , was influenced by Caravaggio , as well as in London , where he gave lessons to the daughters of Charles I. Among the Roman disciples of Honthorst was Matthias Stom .

In 1622, Honthorst was admitted to the painters guild of his hometown. In the 1630s he began working as a portrait painter, in 1637 he moved to The Hague .

In 1641 he was appointed court painter to William , Prince of Orange. In 1649 he participated in the painting of the country palace Huys-ten-Bos . In 1652 he returned to Utrecht, where he died a few years later.

The younger brother of the artist Willem van Honthorst (1594-1666) also became a famous painter of the Golden Age.

Creativity

For the mastery of images of night scenes under artificial lighting, the Italians received the nickname “Night Gerardo” ( Italian. Gherardo delle Notti ), he was also called “Gerardo Flemann” ( Italian: Gherardo Fiammingo ). He was also famous for his numerous images of musicians, both individual instrumentalists and musical ensembles.

At home, he became the center of the group of “ Utrecht caravadjists ” ( Hendrik Terbryuggen and others). He left portraits of the duke of Buckingham and his family, the king and queen of Bohemia , Maria Medici , etc. Under the influence of the artist's work was an anonymous Master of the light of a candle .
