Probably born between 1025 and 1030. The second son of Guillaume II and Stephanie of Urhelsky. Not later than 1049 he inherited his brother - Bernard II, who died childless at a young age.
He waged a feudal war with relatives - Count of Lower Paljars Raymond IV and Count of Urhel Armengol IV .
No later than September 1050, Arto I married Constance, whose origin is not clear. Nothing is known about children.
In 1057 (January 27), he married Lucy de la Marsh, daughter of Count Marsh Bernard I , by a second marriage. From her sons:
- Artaud II (d. 1124), Count of Paliars Sobira
- Odon the Holy (d. 1122), Bishop of Urhel
- Guillaume, mentioned at 1075.
Perhaps they also had a daughter, Maria.
