During the Great Patriotic War, he worked at the central city power station as a duty technician. In 1942 he entered the Krasnoyarsk branch of the Tomsk Electromechanical Institute of Railway Engineers ( TEMIIT , now Omsk State University of Communications ), and in 1944 he was transferred to study in Tomsk . In 1947, he graduated from the Faculty of Energy at this institute, having received the specialty of an engineer in the field of power engineering, and was recommended for postgraduate studies at the institute.
From 1947 he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Railway Transport Engineers (TEMIIT). From 1948 to 1951 he studied in graduate school of the department of electrical networks and systems of Tomsk Polytechnic Institute (TPI). Professor V.K. Shcherbakov was his supervisor at this time. In 1951, under the supervision of Shcherbakov, Zaitsev prepared a Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Longitudinal compensation of the reactivity of power transmissions with simultaneous limitation of short-circuit current of long-distance power lines” for defense. In 1952, after defending his dissertation, Alexander Ivanovich was approved as a candidate of technical sciences. Later he worked as an assistant, senior lecturer at the electric drive department of the TPI, associate professor.
From 1952 to 1954 he was the Acting Head of the Department of Mining Electromechanics, and since 1956 - Head of the Department of Electrification of Industrial Enterprises (now the Department of Electric Drive and Electrical Equipment). Zaitsev headed the department in 1956-1972 and in 1974-1975. During this period, he gave lectures at TPI: Industrial Electronics, Automatic Control Theory, Energy Saving, Electric Saving of Industrial Enterprises, etc.
In 1966, Alexander Ivanovich defended his doctoral thesis on the topic “Theoretical and experimental studies of pulsed control systems of electric DC machines”. In 1967 he became a doctor of technical sciences, since 1968 - Professor of the Department of electric drive and automation of industrial installations.
In 1968, the Research Institute of Automation and Electromechanics was established in Tomsk; A.I. Zaitsev became its director. Later he worked as a professor at the EPA TPI department (1973-1975), head of the electric drive department of the Voronezh Polytechnic Institute (1975-1980), head of the electric drive department of the Lipetsk Polytechnic Institute (1980-1981), head of the Electrical Equipment Department of the Courts of Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University (1981 -2000), since 2000 - Professor of the Department "Electromechanical systems and power supply" of the Voronezh State Technical University.
Alexander Ivanovich Zaitsev has 56 copyright certificates for inventions, is the author of about 350 scientific papers. He was the supervisor of 55 PhDs, including 40 candidates from Tomsk Polytechnic University.
