Payne, Edward John

Edward John Payne ;

He graduated from Oxford Hertford College (1871). Since 1872, he taught there at University College . Since 1874, Barrister at the Lincolns Inn .

Payne's first major work was the four-volume edition of Edmund Burke's selected works (1874-1878) that he had prepared. His main scientific interest was the history of European colonies: starting with the book of the same name ( English of History of European Colonies ; 1877), he published a number of publications on this subject, of which the most ambitious project, “History of the New World, called America” ( Eng. A History of the New World called America ), remained incomplete (in 1892 and 1899 the first two volumes were published). Co-authored with Raymond Beasley Payne prepared for publication a two-volume edition of Voyages of the Elizabethan Seamen ; 1907, selected stories from Richard Hackluit's Travel Book.

Payne was also known as a gifted musician, viola da gamba performer. Since 1899, he was married to Emma Leonore Helena Pepper , niece of historian George Heinrich Pepper . They had three children, including astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposhkina and archaeologist Humphrey Payne .

He died under unclear circumstances, the body was found in the channel.
