Hansby [1] or Gansby [2] ( Africa. and eng. Gansbaai ) is a small town in the south-west of the Republic of South Africa , in the territory of the Western Cape . Part of the area Oberberh . It is part of the local municipality of Offerstrand .

Content
History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1881 by Johannes Cornelis Wessels and was originally called Hansgat . The main occupation of the population was fishing. In 1939, a factory was opened specializing in the production of vitamin A from shark liver [3] . In 1962, Hansby received the status of a municipality [4] .
Geographical position
The city is located in the southern part of the province, on the coast of the Walker Bay of the Atlantic Ocean , at a distance of approximately 80 kilometers (in a straight line) southeast of Cape Town , the provincial capital. The absolute height is 35 meters above sea level [5] .
Climate
The climate of the city is subtropical Mediterranean . The average annual rainfall is 407 mm. The greatest amount of precipitation falls between April and October. The average maximum air temperature varies from 16.7 ° C (in July) to 25 ° C (in January). July is the coldest month of the year. The average minimum night temperature for this month is 7 ° C [6] .
Population
According to the official 2011 census, the population of Hansbai was 11,598 people, of whom 51% were men, and 49%, respectively. In racial terms, the Negroes accounted for 45.16% of the population of the city, the colored ones - 29.69%, the whites - 24.49%, the Asians (including the Indians ) - 0.26%, the representatives of other races - 0.41%. The most common languages among the townspeople were: Afrikaans (53.19%), Spit (39.85%), English (3.49%), Sesoto (1.61%) and Tswana (0.65%) [7] .
Transportation
Through the city passes the regional highway R43. There is a railway station.
