Biography

Sergey Sergeevich Ilyonok was born on September 25, 1912 in the village of Novo-Uda, Balagan District, Irkutsk Region. In 1929 he graduated from high school and got a job in drilling exploration of the Telbess group on the mines of the Zapsibzoloto trust. He worked in the trust as a washerman. In 1930 he entered the Tomsk Industrial Institute named after S. M. Kirov (now TPU) in the city of Tomsk to study at the Geological Prospecting Department (GRF). In 1936 he graduated from the institute, received the specialty of a process engineer. In 1936-1939 he worked as a miner, then he worked as a geologist in the Znamenytino mining department of the Khakasszoloto Trust.

In 1939 he took up teaching activities. He served as an assistant at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrography. During the war years, 1941 to 1943 he worked as head of the reconnaissance party of the Zapsibtsvetmetrazvedka trust. In 1943 he went to the front with a volunteer Stalin brigade formed in Krasnoyarsk . In 1944, after demobilization, he returned to work at the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, went to graduate school. In TPI, his scientific supervisor was Professor Yu. A. Kuznetsov , a specialist in the field of regional geology and metallogeny of the Kuznetsk Alatau, Altai, Western and Eastern Sayan.

In 1947, Sergey Sergeevich defended his thesis on the subject: “Petrography and metallogeny of the Znamenitinsky mining district”, after which he became an assistant professor in the department of petrography.

In the 1950s, he worked as deputy director of the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute for Science, head of the department of petrography, from 1968 to 1983 he worked as a professor in the department of petrography of the institute.

Research interests: petrography of metamorphic and igneous rocks, deposits of tungsten, gold, iron, manganese, the study of the relationship of mineralization with intrusions and with processes of magmatic substitution.
