Biography

Dustin Poirier was born on January 19, 1989 in Lafayette , Louisiana . It has French roots, is a representative of the Louisianian sub-ethnic group of Kajuns [1] .

Initially trained in the hall Gladiators Academy, then moved to the American Top Team . He trained under the guidance of such famous fighters as Yves Edwards and Tim Kreder . He mastered the Brazilian jiu-jitsu , having been awarded the black belt in this discipline [2] .

The beginning of a professional career

He made his debut in mixed martial arts at the professional level in May 2009, sending his opponent in a knockout in the first round. He fought in small American promotions mainly in Louisiana and other southern states - he invariably emerged the winner from all the fights, and he always ended the fights ahead of time.

World Extreme Cagefighting

With seven victories and no defeats in his record, in 2010, Paurie attracted the attention of quite a large organization World Extreme Cagefighting and signed a contract with it. However, in the debut bout by unanimous decision, Danny Castillo lost, thereby suffering the first defeat in his professional career [3] . After a few months, he rehabilitated himself to the fans, for 53 seconds he won Zack Miklright by technical knockout [4] .

In October 2010, the WEC promotion was absorbed by the larger organization Ultimate Fighting Championship , and all the fighters automatically transferred from there to the new owner, including Poirier. In the new organization, he decided to descend from light weight to semi-light [5] .

Ultimate Fighting Championship

The UFC conducted the first fight in Octagon in January 2011, having won on points against Josh Grispy . Then he had to meet with the Brazilian Rani Yahya , but he was injured and was replaced by the same newcomer of the organization, Jason Young - as a result, the confrontation between them continued for the allotted time, Poirier won by unanimous judicial decision. Later, he won by surrender over Pablo Garza [6] .

In 2012, he met with Max Holloway , the future champion of the organization, and in the first round he made him surrender with the help of an elbow lever, thereby earning a bonus for the best reception of the evening. Then he had a rather dramatic duel with “Korean Zombie” Jong Chang Som , for the first time having entered the main card of the tournament to a five-round fight. Poirier lost this duel with a technical surrender in the fourth round - their meeting was recognized as the best fight of the evening, and some publications called this opposition the best fight of the year. After this defeat, Poirier left the Gladiators Academy hall and joined the American Top Team [7] .

Pore continued to participate in UFC tournaments, defeated such fighters as Jonathan Brookins , Eric Koch , Diego Brandan and Akira Corassani , but lost to Kab Swanson and future champion Conor McGregor. [8]

In 2015, he returned back to the light weight category, and it bore fruit - followed by a victory over Carlos Diego Ferreira , Yancy Medeiros , Joseph Duffy and Bobby Green . Twice he received awards for the best performance of the evening. His winning streak was interrupted only in September 2016 in the very first round of the meeting with Michael Johnson [9] .

In 2017 he spent three fights in the UFC. Won to Jim Miller and Anthony Pettis , receiving in both cases a bonus for the best fight of the evening. However, his meeting with Eddie Alvarez ended not very well - in the second round, referee Herb Dean stopped the fight after Alvarez struck two knees to Poirier in a lying position. According to the judge, Alvarez struck illegal strikes unintentionally, so the fight was declared invalid [10] .

By signing a new contract with the organization, in April 2018, Poirier entered the cage against Justin Gage , the former multi-year WSOF champion. He won from his rival by technical knockout at the beginning of the fourth round and once again won the award for the best fight of the evening [11] .

In April 2019, by unanimous decision, he won Max Holloway , who passed into light weight, and thus won the title of interim UFC champion [12] .
