The track was laid on the ski slopes. Women overcame one small (top - 2135 m above sea level) and one large (2290 m) circle, men - one small and two large. 125 runners (75 men and 50 women) from 21 European countries took to the start. Each country could put up to 4 people in each of the races. The strongest in the team championship was determined by the sum of the places of the three best participants.
The 1998 European Cup triumphantly ended for the hosts of the competition. The Italians won both individual races and both team championships. Among women, four participants from Italy showed the best possible outcome: they took the first four places. In the men's run from the start, Antonio Molinari stepped forward and after 3 kilometers had an advantage of 15 seconds over Andrew Pearson from England and Jayme Mendes from Portugal. In the future, he only increased his lead and became the winner of the European Cup.
