His research, organizational and teaching activities gained fame as an outstanding philologist and novelist [1] [3] . At first, the literature of the Middle Ages was included in the circle of scientific interests, but in the process of research, the philologist could not get past the linguistic problems of the Portuguese language , became interested in its dialectology prevalence in the modern world. He was part of a group of linguists collecting materials for the “Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula” ( Atlas Linguístico da Península Ibérica ), with which he worked “in the field” in the provinces of Portugal in 1953-1954 [3] . While studying the history of the Portuguese language in the 1960s, he proposed a new classification of Galician-Portuguese dialects [3] . The latter entailed the development of the “New Grammar of the Modern Portuguese Language” (1984) in close collaboration with the Brazilian philologist Celso Cunha, which fixed a common norm for both European, Brazilian and African versions. This collaboration is considered one of the main scientific achievements of Sintra. A year later, also in collaboration with Celso Cunha, A Brief Grammar of the Modern Portuguese Language was published (1985). Subsequently, this led the scientist to participate in the project to develop a new updated spelling of the Portuguese language .
For over 20 years, he led the Center for Philological Studies ( Centro de Estudos Filológicos , current name Linguistic Center of the University of Lisbon ( Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa )). He was the editor-in-chief of scientific journals: published by the Center for Philological Studies Boletim de Filologia , as well as a new series of the journal Revista Lusitana . Since the early 1970s, he led the project on compiling the “Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Portugal and Galicia” ( Atlas Linguístico e Etnográfico de Portugal e da Galiza ) [1] . He became the organizer of international linguistic congresses and the founder of the Department of General Linguistics and Romance Philology at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lisbon ( Departamento de Linguística Geral e Românica da FLUL ) [3] .
The bibliography of works (dissertations, studies, critical publications, articles, reviews, introductions and unpublished works) cited by the Portuguese philologist Yves Castro in a brief biography of Lindley Sintra includes 84 titles [3] .
Awards and titles
He was elected a member of 4 academies: the Spanish Academy of History ( Academia Espanhola de História , 1955), the Barcelona Academy of Literature ( Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona , 1956), the Portuguese Academy of History ( Academia Portuguesa da História , 1962), the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (1964) [1] .
In honor of the novelist, the Lindley Sintra International Linguistics Award , established by the Portuguese Language Society ( Sociedade de Língua Portuguesa ), which was awarded from 1981 to 2006 by Portuguese and foreign scholars for achievements in learning the Portuguese language, is named. In 1983, when awarding the Order of Liberty, he received the rank of Commander (ComL), and in 1988 he was awarded the Order of Public Education in the degree of Cavalier of the Great Cross (GCIP) [5] .
