History

1978—2000

In the late 1970s, the steel company voestalpine AG decided to expand its product range and services and chose the semiconductor industry for this. As a result of the search for a partner for the formation of a joint venture, cooperation with American Micro Systems (AMI) was started. [one]

In 1981, a joint venture was founded by American Micro Systems Inc. Austria GmbH. AMI owned 51%, and voestalpine AG - 49% of the company. The location of the headquarters was Premstetten Castle ( German ) in Unterpremstetten ( Styria , Austria).

In 1983, Austrian Chancellor Fred Zinovac officially opened a factory for the production of semiconductor wafers with a diameter of 100 mm, with 300 employees.

In 1987, voestalpine AG received 100% company management. In September of the same year, the name was changed from AMI-A to AMS (Austria Mikro Systeme International GmbH). Then, sales offices were opened in the USA (California) and Germany.

In 1991, AMS entered the list of 25 fastest growing companies in Europe. [2] The American industry magazine Semiconductor International has named AMS the best semiconductor factory of 1992.

In June 1993, AMS became the first public European semiconductor company to list shares on the Vienna Stock Exchange . [3]

AMS opened its first sales office in Asia in 1996 . In that year, the company also received accreditations ISO 14001: 1996 and EMAS ( European Union Environmental Management and Audit Scheme ).
