Research Institute of Fundamental Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Research Institute of Fundamental Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran ( Pers. پژوهشگاه دانش های بنیادی ) is an institution under the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran . The institute was created in 1989 under the name “Scientific Research Center of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics” and began work, comprising three research departments in the field of theoretical physics and three research departments in the field of mathematics . In connection with the expansion of the center's activities in the field of theoretical physics and mathematics in [1997], its status was upgraded to a “research institute” and it became known in the scientific community of Iran as the “Scientific Research Institute of Fundamental Sciences”. Currently, the Institute includes 8 affiliated institutes engaged in research in various branches of the basic sciences: Institute of Particles and Accelerators, Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Cognitive Sciences, Institute of Computer Technology, Institute of Nanotechnology, Institute of Analytical Philosophy, Institute of Physics and Institute of Astronomy. From the day of its foundation to the present, the director of the research institute is Mohammad Javad Larijani .

Responsibilities and Activities

The Institute's responsibilities include conducting research in certain areas, establishing active constructive communication with other scientific institutions and communities both domestically and abroad, identifying and studying research requests in the field of basic sciences, creating network centers to provide services to research institutes and others scientific centers. The results of state thinking of the Research Institute of Basic Sciences in particular are its initiative to create in 1992 an electronic communication network called the Iranian Research Network or Iranet, which gradually for the first time connected Iran’s research centers and universities with each other and with foreign the scientific world, as well as the Institute’s efforts to implement national projects, for example, the Iranian State Observatory and launch a domestic collider .

National Projects

Among the Institute’s national projects implemented with state support are the Iranian State Observatory, cooperation with the European Organization for Nuclear Research ( CERN ), grid computing of scientific evolute, the Mev10 linear collider, the Iran Light Source collider, a scientific network linking universities with peripherals, as well as state-owned heavy-duty computing centers.

International Relations

In the field of international cooperation, the Research Institute of Basic Research implements a number of projects related to scientific research, exchange of researchers and joint training of graduate students, concluding numerous agreements with reputable foreign research institutions, for example, the Polytechnic School ( Paris , France ), the University of Paris-South , the European Organization Nuclear Research and Siss [1] .

World Scientific Status

The Research Institute for Fundamental Research is the only institution in Iran that ranked 474th in 2017 among the best scientific institutions according to the Nature Index [2] .
