History
The Cancer Prevention Foundation was founded in 2010. The co-founder and executive director of the fund was Ilya Fomintsev, an oncologist surgeon, a graduate of the medical faculty of Mordovian State University named after N. P. Ogaryov (2002) and the Department of Oncology, St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (2004) [1] . During his years at the Leningrad Regional Oncology Center (2004-2007), his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer , and Fomintsev was directly involved in its treatment. After her death, Fomintsev quit the dispensary and focused on popularizing mass cancer prevention and early diagnostic methods [2] . In 2008, together with a group of like-minded people, Fomintsev organized free preventive examinations of mammologists at the clinic where he worked, attracted sponsors to pay for the work of specialists, and placed advertisements in newspapers. Later, the club “I live in vain” and the PDF itself were established [3] .
Projects
Breast Cancer Early Detection Centers
The first PDF projects were the Breast Cancer Early Detection Centers, the first of which was opened in autumn 2011 on the basis of the city polyclinic No. 31 of the city of St. Petersburg at the First St. Petersburg State Medical University named after academician I. P. Pavlov [4] , and the second one a year later on the basis of the Oncological Dispensary of the Moscow Region on Novoizmaylovsky Prospekt [5] . In the centers, endoscopy rooms were organized, free consultations and studies were conducted [6] . Over the course of the work, the Breast Cancer Early Detection Centers received over 50 thousand people and revealed more than 422 suspected breast cancer , but in 2016, due to the lack of constant funding, the IDF decided to close them and focus on the individual cancer risk assessment program [7] [ 8] .
A pink ribbon in your city
Since 2013, the PDF, together with Avon, with the support of the N. N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology, annually conducts a Роз Pink Ribbon in Your City ’early warning of breast cancer . As part of the action, free examination centers are opened in regional centers for several days, round tables and master classes for doctors, lectures for medical students and additional consultations for patients are held [9] . In 2013, the action took place in Arkhangelsk , Voronezh , Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg , about 6 thousand women were examined, 90 were sent for additional examination and treatment with suspected malignant tumors [10] . In 2014, Tver and Surgut [11] [12] took part in the action. In 2015, actions were held in Syktyvkar , Arkhangelsk , Kaliningrad , Irkutsk and Vladivostok , almost 10 thousand women were examined, more than 200 received referrals for additional examination. In 2016, the action was held in Stavropol , Volgograd , Ufa , Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , Novosibirsk , Tambov and Yaroslavl ; It was planned to reach about 14 thousand people [13] . During examinations and consultations, the FPR found that most residents of the regions of Russia are aware of the need for preventive examinations, but more than half of Russians have never undergone preventive examinations and consulted mammologists only after the onset of symptoms [14] .
Know to live
In May – June 2014, the PDF, the N. N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology, and the Association of Oncologists of the North-West Federal District conducted a joint project “Know to Live.” In the framework of the project, the Oncology Research Institute worked in an extended mode oncology early detection rooms, and for specialists the II Baltic International Cancer Forum "Cancer Prevention and Screening", seminars and master classes for primary care doctors, the international congress of oncammammologists "White Nights" were organized , an international forum “Innovations in Oncogynecology” and a round table prepared jointly with the Health Committee of St. Petersburg [15] [16] .
Higher School of Oncology
In 2015, the IDF launched the grant program for financing additional training for oncologists, called the Higher School of Oncology. In an interview, Fomintsev said that the fund came to the idea of grants for training when one of the potential corporate sponsors put forward a condition - to send a donation of 200 thousand rubles to something “large-scale”, preferably in the field of mammology . Since the amount was insufficient for a large project, it was decided to organize a contest among graduates of medical universities, offering the winner training in residency at the N. N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology . The IDF did not plan a long-term project, but the initiative received wide support among specialists who volunteered to co-finance the program or participate in the educational process [17] . In March 2018, VCO has already held the 4th competition for 10 training grants, the list of partners by this time has expanded to several medical universities, and Biocad was among the sponsors of the program [18] . The selection for the program takes place in 3 stages: at the first, potential participants are assessed by the level of general medical training, knowledge of a foreign language and motivation, at the second stage they solve problems in general medicine and write essays, and at the third stage the best applicants go through an in-person tour in St. Petersburg [19] . In 2017, the competition at the VCO amounted to 38 people per place [20] . In addition to the grant for residency training, VCO organizes a special program of additional classes, which include courses on clinical decision-making, analysis of scientific literature, the basics of scientific work in oncology, communication with patients, medical statistics, academic writing and English [21] . Classes are taught by Russian and foreign oncologists, epidemiologists, scientists and managers from the medical industry [22] . In March 2018, the IDF opened its own lecture hall at house 37a along the 2nd line of Vasilyevsky Island , where it plans to hold VCO seminars and other educational and enlightenment meetings [23] .
SCREEN
In April 2016, the PDF, together with the N. N. Petrov Oncology Research Institute, as part of the “Year of Cancer Prevention” announced by them, introduced the SCREEN automated system for cancer risk assessment and cancer diagnosis (abbreviated from Scientifically-based Cancer Risk Evaluation Engine ). Based on a series of questions that fit into a brief online questionnaire, SCREEN identifies the user at risk for the most common types of cancer: cervical cancer , colon and rectal cancer , stomach cancer, breast cancer , lung cancer , melanoma and prostate cancer glands . SCREEN risk-determining algorithms were based on research and practice guidelines developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer , the American Chemical Society , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , Cancer Research UK , Oncology Center named after M. D. Anderson at the University of Texas at Austin and other organizations adapted to Russian practice by the Oncology Research Institute [24] [25] . After processing the answers, the system provides the user with reasonable recommendations for examination and prevention and allows you to sign up for an examination [26] . According to the initial plan, in 2016–2018 it was planned to test about 30 million people through SCREEN, which would also provide the data needed to create a population screening model [27] . 2 years after the launch, SCREEN was updated to version 2.0. A personal office appeared with the results of the last test and recommendations on examinations, a calendar for planning visits to doctors and a bot for the Telegram messenger . The developers also opened an API for integration into medical information systems, which allowed expanding work with partner clinics [28] .
Profilaktika.Media
In November 2017, the PDF received a grant from the President of Russia in the amount of 1.2 million rubles to launch an educational project in the field of evidence-based medicine and oncology [29] . In March 2018, the Profilaktika.Media website was launched together with students of the Master's Program in Scientific Communication at ITMO University , which initially included publications on chemotherapy , tumor markers , evidence-based medicine and medical education [30] [31] .
Charity Events
Fomintsev held his first charity events in his own apartment, inviting soloists from the Mikhailovsky and Mariinsky Theaters and the D. D. Shostakovich Philharmonic Society to participate in chamber concerts. During the meetings, Fomintsev talked about the problems of cancer prevention, and guests could leave donations to a charity fund [3] . In July 2012, the PDF, together with the Sololo Orchestra of Soloists, organized a charity concert on the roof of the Azimut Hotel on Lermontovsky Prospekt [32] . As Fomintsev noted, this was the first mass contact of the fund with well-known bloggers , the media and potential major sponsors [4] . In June 2016, an IDF charity concert was held as part of the “Year of Cancer Prevention” in the White Hall of the Lendok Film Studio [33] [34] . In 2017, the fund participated in charity events held during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum . On May 31, the Mikhailovsky Theater, as part of the Year of the Fight against Melanoma, supported by Biocad, received 600 guests of the evening of classical ballet, which included, among others, Nikolai Tsiskaridze , Ekaterina Konduarova and Denis Matvienko [35] [36] .
Russian athletes have repeatedly joined charity events in support of the PDF. In October 2015, in the Lada Arena ice palace, the Togliatti Lada entered the match against the Bratislava Slovan in the form of bright pink, the official color of the campaign against breast cancer. Funds from the sale of tickets and attracted during the event were sent to the PDF [37] [38] . Last November, hockey players Atte Engren , Andrey Ermakov , Viktor Baldaev , Dmitry Korobov , Artyom Voronin and Alexander Vasiliev from the Spartak hockey club organized a charity competition for the best mustache with a paid vote within the framework of Usabr , the funds from which were sent to the RFP [ 39] . In April 2017, players and coaches of the Moscow football clubs Spartak and CSKA published a joint video message, “We play until the victory over cancer,” whose goal was to raise funds for the Higher School of Oncology [40] .
